A rushed pre-trip inspection is one of the most common reasons a mobile technician gets called out within the first hour of a shift. A five-minute circle check before merging onto the 401 catches most of what would otherwise become a roadside breakdown or an MTO out-of-service order later in the day.

Tires and Wheels First

Start low and work up: check tread depth, look for uneven wear that hints at an alignment or suspension issue, and confirm every lug nut indicator is lined up. A tire that's slowly losing air is far easier to catch in a yard than on the shoulder of the 401 at highway speed.

Air System and Brakes

Build air pressure and listen for leaks at the gladhands, listen for the compressor cutting in and out normally, and run a full brake test before rolling. A slow air leak that seems minor in the yard can become a real problem two hours into a run.

Lights, Reflectors and Coupling

Every marker light, brake light, and turn signal should be checked with a second set of eyes if possible, since a burned-out light is one of the fastest ways to get flagged at a scale. On the coupling, confirm the fifth wheel is fully locked and the kingpin is properly seated before pulling forward.

Fluids, Belts and Under the Hood

A quick visual check of oil level, coolant, and belt condition takes under a minute and catches the kind of slow leak that turns into an overheated engine on a hot afternoon on the 401 corridor.
